The Blogs-burg Interim

October 3, 2009 by nickshults

My dad pointed out to me the other day I have not blogged in quite some time.  That is true.  But the good news is I have been doing other things.  I stopped and then started climbing…I started volunteering at Soil Born Farms, a really awesome organic farm here in the greater sacramento area.  You should check it out if you’re in the area!

I just started reading Donald Miller’s new book “A Million miles in a Thousand Years”  So far I’m really into it but I have to wait for James to catch up.  But before that I read a book called “Ignore Everyone”…it’s about creativity and finding out what you want to do and doing it well.  Both of these books actually have similar themes although they come at it from two very different standpoints.  Miller, of course, is a Christian writing from a spiritual point of view while the author of the other book (whose name escapes me at the moment) comes from a business/marketing/advertising background but also incorporates some “spiritual” elements into the book.  Good times.

This is interesting…

Spring Time In Sac-Town

March 20, 2009 by nickshults

Hey! It’s Spring! Who doesn’t love that?!?! In honor of this occasion I have compiled my Top-Five Spring Time Resolutions!!

1) Ride My Bicycle (Stop laughing…i’m quite serious)

2) Take more pictures…maybe on a hike? Or perhaps the bike trail?

3) Volunteer with Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services

4) Look into this.

5) I should probably get some work done too…

Sweeny Todd, Amelie, The Producers

March 17, 2009 by nickshults

Never before have I really gone 3 for 3 on Netflix movies but I’ve done it this time!  My latest stash was filled with humor, music, gore and absurdity.  How can you beat that?

A gory musical? Yes! Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is brilliant! It’s funny! it’s entertaining! It’s a little gross! You should watch it immediately! GO!

Amelie is a crazy French flick that his really quite strange but also hilarious in a bizarre sort of way.  You should probably watch that one too.

The Producers (I think they remade this one recently but I saw the original) was also pretty great too.  About a couple of guys who figure out a way they can profit more from a Broadway musical flop than a success.  “Springtime for Hitler” is the musical they choose to run away with thousands of dollars taken from little old ladies to finance the show.

I think I have a bunch of Rom Com’s coming up in my queue.  i KNOW you’re excited for that!!!

Restaurant Review: Taco Bell at Sunrise Ave and Winding Way

March 13, 2009 by nickshults

I’m not usually one write about all the wonderful restaurants I’ve eaten for a couple of reasons.  1) I don’t eat at good restaurants and 2) I’m not pretentious.  But on this, the most rarest of occasions, I will tell you about my wonderful dining experience.

I have been a frequent customer of this particular Taco Bell for most of my time here in Fair Oaks.  The  cheesy bean and rice burrito is fantastic, boasting a delectable blend of beans, rice and fake cheese.  Oh, and it’s a little spicy too…just enough to make it interesting!  The bean burrito with no onions is pretty standard at Taco Bells across the country but I’ve found they put in a little extra cheese here at Sunrise and Winding.  You know, just enough to make you look ridiculous in public.  Oh, and the Mountain Dew is great.  Well, actually, on Wednesday it tasted like poo but today it was great!  The drive-thru employees are especially nice too.

Taco Bell is a wonderful option for vegetarians who, like me, are too lazy or inept to brown bag their flesh-less afternoon feast.   Next time you’re in the area stop on in and mention my name.  Not really.

The Problem With Netflix Abuse

February 13, 2009 by nickshults

When I go to Netflix.com to update my queue every now and agan I am overcome with a sense of nostalgia and the desire to re-watch movies I’ve seen in the past and remember really liking.  And I feel this is OK because I have an UNLIMITED number of movies I can rent per month for one low monthly fee.  The problem, however, is that these movies never live up to their (my?) hype.

For instance, last night I watched Boondock Saints.  I’ve been really wanting to watch this movie again for at least a month so when it finally came up on my queue I was STOKED! But guess what? It’s a terrible movie.  An ethical dilemma so obvious it’s not even fun to think about.  And the shouting.  So much unnecessary shouting.  The dialogue is awful (what writer, even on their worst day, is so uncreative they fill every line with 20 F-bombs.  I’m not being a prude or whatever…I don’t care if a movie has cursing but after a while it just gets insulting).  The ending was good though…I did like that…

So here is my Netflix vow…I will try pretty hard to rent movies that I haven’t seen yet and, for the most part, only rent movies I kind of remember as being good only once in a while.  Like That Thing You Do!  Now there’s a movie that will NEVER get old!

Top Five Things to Do in Sacramento

February 6, 2009 by nickshults

What does a guy like me do in a place like Sacramento in times when I can, like, do whatever I want?  I’m glad you asked because that’s why I’ve created…

The Top Five Things To Do in Sacramento

by Nick Shults

  1. Go to Granite Arch Climbing Gym
  2. Watch movies on my free trial subscription of Netflix (Which reminds me…I need to update my queue)
  3. Drink coffee and utilize free interweb access at the aforementioned Naked Lounge (I’m nervous about searching for the website…I’ll let you take that risk)
  4. Think about riding my bike on the American River Parkway
  5. Hmmm…maybe I need to find more things to do…

Narrowly Avoiding Frustration, Anxiety and Overwelming-ness-ed-ing…

That’s about it.  What about you?

Sac-Town, What?

January 17, 2009 by nickshults

I’m spending this lovely California afternoon hanging out in a nice little local coffee shop called the Naked Lounge. NO! It’s not a place ill-fit for a church worker. it’s just a coffee shop. If you come visit me I’ll take you here…it’s really quite nice.

But i think after I’m done here I’m going to check out mid-town, the trendy part of Sacramento where all the coffee shops and bars are! But the capital isn’t far so maybe i’ll stop by there too. Would you like me to take a picture for you? OK…I will.

In other updates, I found a climbing gym. It’s very nice to be back but my neck and shoulder have been hurting the last couple days. I hope it’s nothing serious!

In another update I’ve resolved to not pay for internet or cable. Instead I’m going to use the money to join the climbing gym. Much healthier, i think.
